I had the pleasure of watching the sun come up over Coney Island last week, which was especially cool because a) I've never been there before, and b) I'd never have any reason to be there so early in the morning if it hadn't been for work. I was there to lend a helping hand to SHOP (the mag I worked at in Sydney), and the photographer Steven Chee always likes to shoot first light. It was so eerie seeing an already strange place completely abandoned. Eventually people started waking up and the first sign of life spotted were the old men in tracksuits shooting the shit as they power-walked and bicycled along the boardwalk. The shots turned out amazing- 50's pin up, kind of edgy.
I'll definitely make it back to Coney Island this summer to ride the Cyclone and eat a hot dog, but I think the image of it all quiet at dawn might be hard to beat.
p.s.- don't forget I'm on tumblr and twitter!
